The Instructions
-
Prepare the Dough: In a large bowl, combine warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5 minutes until foamy. Add the softened butter, egg, salt, and half the flour. Mix well, then gradually add the rest of the flour.
-
Knead and Rise: Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5–7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place it in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm spot for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
-
Mix the Filling: In a small bowl, combine the melted butter and minced garlic. Keep your cheese, herbs, and optional corn ready in separate bowls.
-
Assemble the “Petals”: Punch down the risen dough and roll it out into a large rectangle (about 12×20 inches). Brush the entire surface with the garlic butter. Sprinkle the herbs, cheese, and corn evenly over the top.
-
Cut and Stack: Cut the dough into 6 long vertical strips. Stack the strips on top of each other. Cut the stack into 6 squares.
-
Load the Pan: Grease a standard loaf pan. Turn the pan on its side and slide the dough squares in, standing them upright like folders in a filing cabinet.
-
Final Rise and Bake: Cover the pan and let it rise for another 30 minutes. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
-
Bake: Bake for 30–35 minutes until the top is deeply golden brown and the cheese is bubbling. Let it cool for 10 minutes before pulling it apart.
A Quick Tip
If you’re in a hurry, you can use store-bought pizza dough or canned biscuit dough. Just flatten the pieces, fill them, and stack them the same way!
