Savory Cube Steaks

Instructions

  1. Layer the Base: Place the sliced onions in the bottom of the slow cooker to create a flavorful bed for the meat and prevent sticking.

  2. Season and Stack: Season your cube steaks lightly with black pepper. Arrange the steaks over the onions. If you need to stack them, try to stagger them so the sauce can reach every piece.

  3. Mix the Sauce: In a small bowl or measuring pitcher, whisk together the beef gravy and the cream of mushroom soup until smooth.

  4. Pour and Cover: Pour the gravy mixture evenly over the steaks, ensuring all the meat is submerged.

  5. Slow Cook: Cover and cook on Low for 6 to 8 hours or on High for 3 to 4 hours. The longer, slower cook time is recommended for the most “fall-apart” results.

  6. Serve: Once the meat is tender, stir the gravy one last time. Serve the steaks and plenty of sauce over mashed potatoes, egg noodles, or steamed rice.

Tips for Success

  • No-Sear Shortcut: While you can sear the steaks in a pan first for extra color, the slow cooker does a great job of developing deep flavor without that extra step.

  • Vegetable Add-ins: If you want a full meal in one pot, toss in some sliced mushrooms or baby carrots at the beginning of the cook time.

  • Thicker Gravy: If you prefer an even thicker sauce, whisk 1 tablespoon of cornstarch with 1 tablespoon of cold water at the very end and stir it into the bubbling liquid for 5 minutes before serving.
